About
Consider the proposition that human language has a prominent and perhaps dominant place in Big Data. We begin with a survey of Big Data: define it; question whether it is really new at all; examine why it has disrupted communication and computing; characterize its types; and explore the constellation of technologies, new and old, that address it. With that background, we consider the magnitude of mission problems specific to human language, as both speech and text. Finally, we survey the specific technologies that address those problems and the degree to which they constitute solutions.
